Wood jointers (surface planers) are the very first machines a piece of rough-sawn, warped, or bowed lumber encounters in a professional woodworking shop. Their primary function is to flatten one face of a board and square one adjoining edge (at a perfect 90-degree angle) to establish a true reference surface before the board is passed through a thickness planer or table saw. The cutting action is performed by passing the wood over a cylindrical cutterhead housed between two heavy-duty cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables. When selecting a jointer, key considerations include the bed length (longer beds allow for straightening longer boards), maximum jointing width, and cutterhead design (traditional straight knives vs. premium spiral/helical heads for tear-out-free finishes).
