Polishing and buffing compounds are specialized chemical-abrasive formulations engineered for ultra-fine surface finishing, micro-scratch removal, haze reduction, and high-gloss mirror-like shine enhancement. They are indispensable for detailing and refinishing stainless steel, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, precious jewelry alloys, automotive clear coats, acrylics, glass, polished stone, and hard engineered plastics. These formulations combine precision-graded abrasive particles (aluminum oxide, chromium oxide, synthetic micro-diamonds) suspended in solid fatty binders, stearins, or water/oil emulsions designed to prevent thermal buildup during high-speed rotation. Compounds are available as solid molded bars (e.g., Dialux, jewelers rouge), liquid rubbing emulsions, and syringe-dispensed diamond pastes. Crucial selection criteria include grit aggression grade (heavy cut, medium blend, or ultra-fine swirl-free finish), target workpiece material, and compatibility with buffing wheels (wool felt, stitched cotton, muslin, or density-graded foam).
